Vesta Stock App

This app was a side hobby app created by myself and a friend. We worked on this project from late-2013 to mid-2014. The idea came from my friend who was an avid trader who liked the native iOS stock app. However, he felt the current experience lacked options for power users, and he wanted more options to manage his stocks and portfolios.

We released the app in the App Store in the middle of 2014. The original goal was to create a similar experience to the native iOS stock app with gestures inspired by the task app "Clear". After minimal traction, we eventually decided to remove it from the app store.

Creating a card-based experience

A few months after taking it off the App Store, I decided I wanted to revisit the experience. I wanted to test redesigning the core experience around the idea of a digital Rolodex. The idea was to have stocks in cards and allow the ability for our users to scroll through a list and add or delete cards if so they desire. For gestures, I wanted to leverage interaction patterns that felt native to the iOS ecosystem.

Experimenting with gestures

Since this was a mobile app, we wanted to take advantage of gestures. We believed that gestures help bring life to the experience. We also wanted to experiment with mobile gesture patterns to create an intuitive and unique experience.

Adding new stocks

When a user wants to add another stock to the list or portfolio, they can do so by tapping the "plus" icon at the top right corner. To make the search experience quicker and easier, we added a typeahead feature that would determine each character stroke to the corresponding names of stocks in the database.
