Background

Issio Solutions is an EMR (Electronic Medical Records) application on iOS and the web designed to enhance patient care and safety by improving communication and efficiency inside a hospital.

I had the privilege of being their resident first designer, leading all design initiatives bringing the product to its first initial beta release. We received very positive feedback from clinics in the East Bay.

In 2015, Issio Solutions reached an agreement with HCA Healthcare to provide solutions for their surgery centers and surgical hospitals. HCA owns and operates approximately 166 hospitals and approximately 113 free-standing surgery centers in 20 U.S. states and in London, England. Read more about the agreement here.

As a design exercise revisited my design and explored concepts that we initially wanted to use but did not have the opportunity to do so due to time, limited resources, and technology limitations. 

Beginning of the journey

Issio Solutions is a start-up based in the East Bay that was founded by a board-certified anesthesiologist. I was assigned as the first designer, and I was responsible for the user experience and face of the product. When I first started working on the app in 2012, the Issio story was less than a month old. It was early 2012, iPad was just released, and people were beginning to understand its business/consumer benefits and value. 

In the beginning, most of the early product concepts and ideas were scribbled on loose papers, sticky notes, and Word docs. Our initial goal was to release the first beta version of the app sometime in the fourth quarter. The team was made up of myself, a Product Manager, and three Software Engineers. It was a big learning experience as this was my first time building a large-scale application.

The real problems inside the surgery centers

For most hospitals, the OR (Operating Room) transactions are done on a whiteboard with paper print-outs that constantly need to be managed and maintained leading to frequent errors. Surgery schedule print-outs also become rapidly outdated as schedules are continuously moved or changed. Unfortunately, these mistakes are very expensive for the hospital and can be a matter of life or death for doctors and patients.

Designing a solution

Transitioning the experience to mobile was essential. Not only did it allow for more accurate data—it allowed easier and faster updates. In addition, the data can be viewed from anywhere on the go. To do this, we needed to make our platform familiar to our users (doctors, nurses, and patients) and easily accessible from any web-connected device.
